Fear :: Secure Your Mask Before Helping Others

In this series, we explore the concept of fear. Fear can paralyze us and cause us to stop being generous with our lives. We carry all sorts of fears about our relationship with God. Do we trust that God loves us? Do we trust that he’ll provide?

Fear often causes us to serve ourselves before reaching out and serving others. The advice we commonly receive during an airline safety speech is to “Secure our own masks before assisting others”. While this practice may have validity in the airline situation, we can’t live our lives with this mentality. When we look at our world and store up for ourselves before helping others, we miss out on all that God has for us. This week’s primary scripture isĀ LukeĀ 10:25-37.

This week, we are challenged to wrestle with the following questions:

  • What does it look like for me to move towards radical generosity today?
  • What does it look like for me to “fear not” and give courageously to others in need?
  • Am I hoarding for the future?
  • Is my heart too attached to my stuff or my hope of stuff?
